The sun was shining when we emerged from our fateful meeting with Mr. Wolf. Somehow I had felt as if we would never see the sun again, and yet here it was, as if the bright light had been there the whole time.

Wolf Sr. had refused point blank to give me any kind of assistance as the Witch of Mintwood. He had further refused any kind of assistance to his beloved grandson.

I was nearly back at Jasper’s truck when I realized that something had gone morbidly wrong. Jasper was not behind me.

Quickly, I spun around to see where my boyfriend had gotten to. I spotted him standing in the middle of the dusty parking lot, and even from a distance I could tell that he was fuming. I started to motion for him to join me, but it was clear that he was too angry to walk.

I hurried back to him.

“He doesn’t understand me! He doesn’t understand what we have. I mean, not when we’re practically in . . ” Jasper stopped abruptly. His eyes had gone wide. “Not when we’re so close!”

I took a deep, calming breath. “Yeah, we’re close,” I said. My stomach clenched and I could barely look at him or breathe. “I think he might help us,” I murmured.

“No, he won’t. He said so in no uncertain terms. In fact, the terms were more than clear, and definitely unhelpful. Can you believe him?” Jasper demanded.

Before I could answer, he soldiered on toward the truck, waving his arms wildly. Jasper so rarely lost his composure that I hardly knew how to react. Just like with Hansen, I supposed this was his turn.

“It will be okay,” I said.

He looked around at me. “I have no idea why you’re so unreasonably calm,” he said, almost ranting, and still waving his hands in the air.

But I was feeling a strange sense of relief so strongly that it was almost as if the very air was fizzing around me. All that buildup, and the most powerful, straight-laced, stuffy man I had ever encountered had given me an unashamedly sophisticated wink.

“I can’t stay here. Let’s get going. I have to get back to work anyway,” Jasper huffed.

“Yeah, I was going to meet Liam at the Daily Brew for coffee,” I said.

“Give him my best,” said Jasper. “I’m sorry, but it looks like we’re on our own.”

I got into the truck, and he shut my door behind me. Despite the certainty in his tone, I wasn’t so sure he was right. But I couldn’t make him listen to me when he was so distraught, and I wasn’t sure how to go about it anyhow.

I frowned into the wind and in desperation asked whatever ghosts might be in the vicinity to give me a simple problem to solve instead of the ones I had, which were all so blasted complicated.
